Molly’s Hair Restoration Project

Hello, everyone! How’s your Sunday? I had a pretty good one – waking up at 6:00 am to my dad driving the RV back home while I was lying in the RV bed(that was fun:)), church, Mooyah for lunch, and coming home. I’ve been working on a little project….well, BIG) do you know what that is? *looks at title of the post* Oh. Seems like you already know. 😉

As you probably know, I had my first doll Molly for two years and a few months. When I first got her, I used a plastic brush on her – thinking it was a wire wig brush like AG suggests!

Her hair went from THIS:

to THIS:

Terrible, right? I tried washing her hair, brushing it with the right brush, misting, using all of AG’s hair tricks, washing it with conditioner, none of those options were able to help my poor Molly’s hair. I had enough money to get her a new head, but….would my doll ever be the same again? Those eyes when I look into them, they’re special. I would never see those same eyes again if I got her whole head replaced. It might not matter to some people, but to me it does. I tried asking AG if they would just pop her original eyes out and insert them into the new head, but they said they couldn’t do that. And re-wigging? I would hate to do that. I could damage Molly’s head, and then I’d have to get her a new one.

So I am now forced with the solution of a downy dunk.

At first, I was scared. Would it make her hair thin? Damage her hair further? Will it dye her hair blue because the downy I’m using is blue? Thanks to advice from friends online, I finally decided to do a downy dunk, along with curling her hair to try to get this look again:

I’m willing to try.

So today, I dunked her hair in downy! I am going to soak her for twenty-four hours.

IMG_4662IMG_4663I’m ladling Downy on the hair that isn’t submerged hour or so.

IMG_4664IMG_4665I can’t wait to see the results tomorrow, eeeek!

Have you ever tried to restore your dolls hair? Out of all your dolls you have, which one has the best hair? Which one has the worst? Have you ever done a Downy Dunk before?

On the other hand…My other doll wich is a MADAME ALEXANDER doll has the WORST HAIR EVER!!! It’s so everywhere all the time! NEVER GO OUTSIDE WITH HER HAIR LOOSE like never ever ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It will just be a disater! But then with Isabelle’s hair it might get a little messy in the wind but you can just brush it out and it will be ok. I use a wire brush on my doll. Isabelle: Hi Molly! That was cool seeing which of your dolls had the worst and best hair everyone! And thank you for the ‘good luck on the hair restoration project’ wishes! I hope it goes well too!

  6. Oh, dear!! That is SO scary!! I’ve thought about sending my Rebecca and Caroline to get their heads replaced, but I feel EXACTLY the same as you. If I replaced their heads it’d be like getting a whole new doll. It would never be the same Rebecca or Caroline again 🙁
I hope the Downy Dunk works!! You must be scared to be doing it. I’d be freaking out 😕

Out of my dolls, the one who has the best hair has gotta be Kaya. Literally, the softest doll hair EVER!! The one with the worst hair is Rebecca. I made a mistake when I first got her, too. I didn’t know that you’re supposed to use a hair pick on her, so I started brushing through the hair completely! And now her curls will never be the same again. 🙁

Hmm. That questions a toughie. I really don’t know what Molly’s is like, cause’ I haven’t taken out her professional braids since the day I got her! 😉 Kit’s short hair is really manageable, but for some reason it gets stray hairs easily. Plus, it seems like if I don’t mist her hair while brushing, it gets weird. Maybe it’s from the 3 months she was lost in the basement!
Yeah, when I was 8, ( totally pre-Molly) I went down to the basement with Kit,(it’s a MESS down there, like black hole mess!) put her down on some boxes by accident, and didn’t see her again for months! Turns out she fell behind the boxes. Poor Kit! 🙁
Kit: Thanks, Kelly. I just LOOVE talking to Christmas decorations. *glares* Me: Kit! I was 8 years old! *facepalm*
I wish you the best of luck with Molly’s hair results tomorrow! Do a post about it, or you’ll be paying eardrum insurance! 😀 Just kidding. 🙂 Kit and Molly say, “GOOD LUCK, MADI AND MOLLY!!!!!!!” Annnnnddd, they just blasted out my ears. LOL. Kelly♥

Oh, one more thing. What are Josefina, Cecile, Jasmine, and Emilie thinking about their sister and friend’s hair-restoration?

I hope it goes well!:) (BTW I’ve found out since I told you to wash it that using any kind of brush slowly hurts the hair little by little, and that finger brushing with wet fingers works better in general. A friend told me to do that and since my dolls’ hair was getting yucky, I started doing it, and it works really well! I thought maybe after the downy dunk you might want to try it.:))

And BTW Jaclynn, I think your dolls look fine! Your Rebecca especially is absolutely adorable!:) But I also have a Nicki with kinda yucky hair, and the same friend who told me to finger brush in general helped me get Nicki’s hair looking almost new again.:) (I’d have to go and find the exact instructions in a PM she sent me, because I can’t remember them perfectly, but if you’d like to know them I’ll put them in a comment on your blog or something.;))

Good for you for restoring her hair! It is VERY intimidating the first time, but you’ll be glad you did it 🙂
I’ve done a Downy Dunk on a few dolls, and it improved their hair nicely 🙂
Also, here’s a video of a girl who fixed up an old Elizabeth doll, by doing what you’re doing and straightening the hair (if you do it right, it doesn’t damage the hair), here’s the link if you want to check it out. Even if you don’t try it, it’s fun to see what she did 🙂

    Hi everyone!
Sorry I can’t reply to each and every comment separately as of right now. But thank you SOOO much for commenting. I read every one.

Kelly – Cecile, Emilie, Jasmine and Josefina don’t think too much about it. They hope Molly’s hair turns out nice, but they’re definitely thinking, “It probably stinks to be you right now.” Poor Molly! Naked with weird curlers in her hair. (and don’t worry, I’ll do a post about it as soon as I take the curlers out. I’m excited for the results.)

And generally speaking to everyone – I decided not to curl her hair with a curling iron because the first time I did it, it turned out funny. Like, seriously funny. Like, seriously funny like funny weird and not funny ha-ha. Like, seriously funny like funny weird and not funny ha-ha like so funny I forgot to laugh kinda weird and funny and not funny at the same time. (LOL!) So I just put her hair in home-made curlers and I hope that will turns out great and wavy. If it doesn’t work, I will braid her hair EXTREMELY tight and dip her braids in very hot water and let them dry that way.

But the downy dunk worked! Her hair is so much softer, and the terrible ends like you saw in the pictures are gone. They’re soft and not as split-end like. DOWNY DUNKS WORK! 😀

I know what you mean about Molly’s eyes, too. See, Kit has this little mark on her face, a little on her eyebrow. It’s clear, and not major, but it still bugged me. It would make a weird glare on her face in pictures, and no baking soda paste would take it off. So, when I was 10, I was considering sending her to the doll hospital for a new head. But then, I looked at her eyes. They’re gorgeous. I think Kit’s got different color blue eyes from other Kits. My Kit’s are just beautiful. So, I decided against the doll hospital, and now I think the mark gives her character! 😉

First of all: I’M BACK!! HI EVERYBODY!!
As far as doll hair goes… Addy’s is the craziest 😛 I don’t have a pick, so I’ve never brushed it, and I also managed to lose her hairnet 😛 And then Kaya. Somehow her hair manages to tangle when its braided. I don’t know whats up with that. 😛 Natalie used to have the best haiir, but then my sister and her friend were brushing all their dolls’ hair, and decided to do Nat’s. They squirted Downy in it even though she didn’t need it, and it’s never been the same since. It has lots of flyaways and stuff now. So, the winner of my-dolls’-best-hair award is…

Hearts for Hearts Girl Tipi!! hehe 🙂

See ya soon! (As in, probably next post 😛 hehe)

My Molly’s hair came weird, ya know, all frizzy, and the wrong color. But i’m fine with it! But, her glasses had a defect, and AG won’t replace them! GRR! Molly has the worst hair and my disney princess toddler doll has the best.
